Letter: The Love of Towers Is Real

Stephanie Donnell has happy AM memories

Hi Paul, great article on towers

Towers ARE radio. Those of us who read Radio World 30 years ago still recall the Man of Steel tower columns by Troy Conner.

I’m sad anytime I hear of a local AM station going dark, as this means one less chance that a kid somewhere will be able to hear that station on a crystal radio they constructed, and discover the intrinsic magic of radio.

When I was a kid 50+ years ago, we had two AMs, WHEB 750 and WBBX 1380, in nearby Portsmouth, N.H. Both are long gone. I remember calling in to request songs — to be recorded on my tape recorder — and calling in to a morning talk show when I wasn’t in school. Another local AM, WTSN 1270 (still on the air) in Dover, N.H., used to have a flea market/swap shop program in the evenings.

Towers still hold a fascination for me — the different designs, what’s mounted on them, the bays. And of course, whether the lighting is operating correctly!
