Letter: What About the Future of RFE/RL?

Elle,

President Trump has suddenly decided to shut down several U.S. international stations, including Radio Liberty and Radio Free Europe.

This morning, Radio Prague International published the following news: Czech Foreign Minister Lipavský tries to save RFE/RL after U.S. announces funding cuts.

The necessary budget estimated by a Czech member of the European Parliament is €150 million, which is low compared with the annual budget of the European Union, which in 2024 was €189 billion.

Personally, I hope that the European Union will react and allow Radio Liberty and Radio Free Europe to resume broadcasting as soon as possible.

As a joke, this decision by President Trump is certainly one of the few that would allow him to say he’s fighting global warming! Shortwave broadcasting requires powerful transmitters that consume a lot of energy!

Have a nice day,

— Paul Jamet
