IBOC Signal Coverage Discussed

NPR Labs’ John Kean gave a peek into HD-R receiver field-testing to determine FM coverage areas for IBOC on 850 public stations.

NPR Labs’ John Kean gave a peek into HD-R receiver field-testing to determine FM coverage areas for IBOC on 850 public stations.

NPR Labs says it has developed new measurement techniques to predict signal coverage. He couldn’t go into great detail because the study isn’t yet complete (and CPB gets first crack, since it funded the research); however what he did say was interesting. You’ll read more in an upcoming issue of Radio World.

When I asked John for a top-level view he said, “This is cracking the code on how to predict interference to IBOC. [This information] can help stations know where their IBOC coverage goes” and where the signal doesn’t go. Just signal strength alone isn’t enough to know that, he said.

This year’s confab might have been the last for the IEEE at the historic Hotel Washington, located on Pennsylvania avenue “just steps away from The White House.” The hotel is closing for two years due to renovations. There’s no definite word yet on next year’s Washington-area hotel.
