Is 2012 the Year of the Ultrabook?

PC makers slimming down laptops, says InformationWeek

Just as 2011 was dubbed the year of the tablet as far as tech trends, 2012 is shaping up to be the year of the “ultrabook.”

So says Information Week, which reports that whether ultrabooks will prove to be as affordable as tablets and smartphones will be a big question at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show next week. Ultrabooks are very thin but full-featured portable computers.

Mac sales have grown faster than PC sales for the past 32 quarters, according to the account, which adds that the very thin MacBook Air accounts for 28% of Apple’s U.S. notebook sales.

Information Week reports that PC manufacturers are rushing ultrabooks to market in response. IHS iSuppli projects ultrabooks will make up 43% of global PC shipments in 2015, up from 2% in 2011 and 13% in 2012. CEA Director of Research Shawn DuBravac said recently he expects to see 30 to 50 new ultrabooks debut at CES.
