Oneonta, Ala.’s WRCL — a 2,500 watt AM/88 watt FM translator station — is proving that the good, old-fashioned radio-thon still works; at least in the northern Alabama county.
The classic hits-formatted station held its 16th annual fundraiser for the Blount County Education Foundation Sept. 25, raising the most money in its history — $285,730.
If that number isn’t impressive enough, then consider that it’s $122,000 more than the group got from the 2013 effort.
Blount County Education Foundation has supported various academic activities in the area since its 1998 founding, and has provided $2,031,270 to date to help offer summer library and academic camps programs; tutoring and resources for at-risk students; sponsoring the scholars bowl and spelling bee programs; sponsoring the High School Ambassadors program; and the main project, a classroom grant program.
