IDC Star Moves Up a Magnitude

Gen 2 satellite receiver provides for local ad insertion

International Datacasting’s Star Pro Audio G2, to be exhibited at the NAB Show, is a second-generation DVB-S/S2, MPEG2/3 audio receiver with an integrated advertisement and content playout system with live audio decoding and file playout.

It is available in two models, the Star Two G2, with two onboard audio decoders, and the Star Four G2, with four onboard audio decoders.

The second generation has improved timeshifting capabilities and handles time zone adjustments. A release highlights the improved ad handling capabilities: “Star Pro Audio includes a copy split capability that allows operators to send select ads to specific regions or specific receivers. Audio files stored in the receiver can be inserted into live or recorded programming.”

The release adds that a single unit can replace multiple older units. “Cost savings are realized through shared hub support which enables multiple radio networks to share one four-channel receiver instead of having each network deploy its own standalone, single-channel receiver.”

International Datacasting Chairman and Interim CEO Del Lippert said the system will help radio broadcasters boost revenue and lower operating expenditures.

“The platform increases advertising revenues because it enables highly localized ad insertion. The ability to sell more targeted ads — by location, demographic, time zone, or language — means more revenue opportunities across the entire network.”

The release says that the bandwidth efficiency of the G2 is “70 percent less bandwidth” compared to the competition. Onboard content memory is via a memory card. An HE-AAC option is available.
