Orban Promotes Loudness Meter

Version 2.0 expands platforms and metering standards

Processor maker Orban announced that its Orban Loudness Meter software is now available in version 2.0.

The free meter now works with Macs (OS 10.6 or higher) as well as Windows XP, Vista and 7. Also new is support for ITU-R Rec. BS. 1770-2 and EBU R 128 metering specifications. A release also states that the meter scales conform to EBU – Tech 3341, so they can display loudness in absolute terms or relative to a user-chosen level.

New features include an extended “integration” time for the “manual start/start mode” to up to three hours, to accommodate formats such as feature-length films. A high-end (384 kHz sample rate) Reconstructed Peak meter allows for mastering engineers to intercept clipped converted material.

The VU meter can be realigned so that 0 aligns with common levels such as –20 dBFS (SMPTE) and –18 dBFS (EBU). Information output options are improved with the availability of “comma delimited” ASCII log files for use with spreadsheets or graphing applications.
