Classical Music’s Karl Haas Remembered

WCLV(AM) reports that longtime classical music radio personality Karl Haas, host of “Adventures in Good Music,” died on Sunday in Detroit. He was 91.
His program was carried by stations in the United States, Australia, Mexico, Panama and globally by Armed Forces Radio.
According to a biography provided by the station, Haas began his broadcasting career in 1950, hosting a weekly preview of Detroit Symphony Orchestra concerts on WWJ, Detroit. In 1959, “Adventures in Good Music” came to be when WJR in Detroit offered him a prime morning hour of 10 a.m. for a one-hour program of classical music and commentary. In 1970, Haas and WCLV joined to produce and distribute his program.
From 1967 to 1971, Haas was president of the Interlochen Academy of Arts in Interlochen, Mich.
Accolades include two George Foster Peabody Awards for excellence in broadcasting, and the National Telemedia Award and Person of the Year award from Boston’s WGBH(FM). In 1997, he was the first classical personality to be inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame.
Additionally, Haas was the author of the book “Inside Music” and the producer of three CDs with WCLV.
Haas is survived by his sons, a daughter and two grand-children.
