The National Association of Black Owned Broadcasters supports legislation sponsored by Sen. John McCain that requires divestiture of radio stations by companies that exceed the local radio ownership limits under the FCC’s new ownership rules. The committee passed the legislation last month.
NABOB Executive Director and General Counsel Jim Winston said the group believes the agency should not have let current clusters that now exceed the limits be grandfathered.
Although NABOB is pleased the commission plans to use Arbitron Radio Metros as the new market definitions, Winston said the commission’s decision to include noncommercial stations in the market definition “may provide a loophole for some companies to avoid divestitures.” NABOB believes the FCC should reconsider that provision.
