Sirius Launches Friday

Satellite radio is getting closer.
Sirius Satellite Radio plans to launch the first of its three satellites this Friday, June 30 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome launch site in Kazakhstan. The Central Asian launch site was a former Soviet spaceport.
Sirius-1 is a Space Systems/Loral satellite that will be launched using a Proton rocket. Sirius will deploy its satellites in an inclined elliptical orbit constellation with elevation angles of 60 degrees to 90 degrees over the continental U.S.
Sirius claims the high elevation angles will ensure better reception for its satellite-delivered DAB programming.
It plans to launch its two other satellites this fall and begin operating its 100 channels of service by the end of the year.
