Driver distraction caused by hand-held cell phone use is benefiting radio — to the tune of $9 million. That’s how much a trade group representing responsible cell phone use is pouring into a radio ad campaign. The ads are sponsored by the wireless education program of the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association. They urge drivers not to talk on hand-held cell phones “if those conversations pose a danger to themselves or other drivers.”
Bills to ban drivers from using hand-held cell phones have been proposed in 40 states, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. At least a dozen localities have passed such bans.
