A report by Kantar, published last year, shows that 79% of the Brazilian population across 13 cities listen to the radio, with listening time remaining high at three hours, 47 minutes daily.
Radio Gazeta, one of the oldest and largest radio stations in Espírito Santo, Brazil, averages approximately 7,000 listeners per minute. The station has recently upgraded its facilities with two new studio installations as part of its transition to IP. But the station sought the ability to interact with listeners remotely.
The station has deployed two Calrec Type R IP mixing systems, each supporting 20 channels, across its locations in Vitória and Colatina. Each production control room includes two six-fader panels, an LSP and a dedicated IP core, alongside Calrec Assist’s web-based GUI to allow remote production.
Calrec emphasizes the flexibility of Type R, built on standard networking hardware and using soft panels. Type R now provides a number of radio-focused features. They include routing that allows operators to record off the air while not affecting the on-air mix. Calrec said it is suitable for a guest interview for future transmission.
Type R systems include GPIO control over console talkback facilities, user labels for mix-minus busses, monitor outputs can now follow another monitor selector and a large, 120-channel path DSP pack option with 32 aux buses.
The systems can also now be controlled by Calrec’s remote production capability, True Control 2.0.
Type R’s 5.1-capable IP core allows broadcasters to benefit from virtual working practices on a SMPTE 2110-compliant IP backbone.
