BREMEN, Germany — For the first time, on June 27, regional private radio programs will be broadcast via DAB+ in Bremen, Germany. The Media Council of the Bremische Landesmedienanstalt created the basis for this in 2017 and assigned Media Broadcast GmbH transmission capacity to accommodate a digital radio platform in the state of Bremen. In Bremerhaven, the regional private programs will start via DAB+ next year, according to radioszene.de.
As many of you are undoubtedly aware, BroadcastAsia2018 was held June 26–28. Commercial Radio Australia CEO Joan Warner addressed attendees at the event.
Warner reviewed some of the “doom and gloom” headlines about radio’s demise, refuting them as lacking in facts, according to asiaradiotoday.com. “While the headlines are telling people that new technology will destroy radio, the facts tell a different story. In the UK the radio business puts a lot of money through the economy…In Australia radio is outstripping the music streaming services by a factor of about six to one,” according to Warner, quoting the statistics that prove the points.
Warner asserted that radio and audio are undergoing a resurgence, and as an example pointed to News Corporation in the UK, which is creating a new radio and podcasting operation in its UK headquarters to capitalize on said resurgence of radio, according to the same article. “The best way to protect the future is to create it… Our job is to grow radio,” she said. “The key to success is not only high quality local content but the ability to embrace change and deliver free high quality content across many platforms.”
Warner reiterated one point that we broadcasters can’t forget about radio: “Its strengths include that is it live, local, reliable and free,” she said.
