OSLO � With the Norwegian national networks shutting off their VHF FM transmitters across that country during 2017, there are many soon-to-be-available frequency resources in Norway. NRK has almost 1200 transmitters and Radio Norway almost 700; by the end of this year, those channels will all be quiet across the country.
Local FM radio stations have licenses to continue transmitting on FM till 2022.
Norway�s communications authority, Nkom, will investigate what the free frequencies of NRK, P4 and Radio Norway can actually be used for going forward, according to lokalradio.no. There are many ideas and suggestions, but nothing is certain. Local radio is on the list of NKom, regarding the possible use of FM after 2022, according to the same article.
Sweden recently indicated that they now want more frequency resources: Several stations in Sweden have applied to Norway to increase their transmitter power on frequencies that had previously been shared with broadcasters in Norway. Sweden is also planning to license more new frequencies on FM in the next few years.
