OSLO Back in January of this year, the FM switch-off began in the Nordland area of Norway. Now, Digital Radio Norway is reporting that radio usage has stabilized there. Recent survey results indicate that 64.2% of Nordlanders hear radio each day, as opposed to the same period in 2016, when the figure was 64.8%.
Digital radio Norway represents the consortium of major Norwegian broadcasters that have joined the transition from FM to Digital Radio, and is made up of NRK, P4 and Bauer Media.
Looking across the entirety of Norway, from January, surveys show that 64.1% of all Norwegians hear radio daily.Total listening was 67.1% in the same period last year, according to radio.no.
Over-the-air digital radio is used by 1.9 million people daily, corresponding to 72% of radio listeners and is thus by far the largest of the radio platforms;24% use the internet, and the 13% use television set. FM is currently used by 37% of listeners, according to dn.no. Norwegians spend 81 minutes on radio every day.
Surveys also indicate that listeners are strongly inclined to select DAB radios in the transition to digital. About 84% of all households now have DAB radios, which corresponds to about 4.75 million DAB radios in total.Of these, 1.25 million are in car. “There has been a DAB growth in the fleet of over 200,000 more appliances since May this year, it is a good development. At the same time, we expect that many will upgrade the car even after FM shutdown, “says Ole Jrgen Torvmark, General Manager of Digital Radio Norway, quoted in the dn.no article.
