In this letter to the editor, the author comments on Dan Slentz’s recent story “10 Tips for Starting Your New LPFM Station.” Radio World welcomes letters to the editor on this or any story. Email radioworld@futurenet.com.
I agree with everything Dan said.
But from my experience I have learned that it is “easy” (at least for me) to put a station on the air. But keeping it on the air is the challenge.
Skipping over most of the angst when KUSF was sold by the university I tried to convince the volunteer staff of this. They completely disregarded my advice.
I scrounged enough to build a control room for streaming as San Francisco Community Radio and then worked with them to get LPFM KXSF(LP).
In the process many got burned out trying to keep the carrier modulated.
A radio station, no matter if it is an LPFM or a 50 kW Clear Channel or a Class C FM, is a living creature that must be fed 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.
Never underestimate the amount of work necessary to do this.
