Responding to the Radio World commentary about whether radio should be “forced from the dashboard” to save drivers money … I think manufacturers have overlooked consumer preferences.
Including AM/FM broadcast reception is still on my list of desired features.
If there is money to be saved, why not discontinue or scale back certain display features, automated driving novelties and other costly technology that no one has asked for and which are seldom actually used?
For that matter, if car makers get rid of enough unwanted marketing add-ons, they can improve what’s left of the information display to define what “CHECK ENGINE” really means. The sensors are there. Give consumers the value-added details that may enable them to prioritize a trip to the repair shop, or disregard a trivial fault for a while.
