Reading Paul McLane’s article in the Sept. 24 issue rekindled my own “tower” memories from long ago … I grew up in Moberly, Mo., home to KWIX, 1230AM.
Every Christmas season they would illuminate the entire length of their tower in red lights, calling it the “Christmas candle.” Every season they would kick off the tradition with an on-air Christmas party that culminated with a countdown to the lighting of the “candle.”
I remember my grandmother walking me down to the corner of our street, where we would have an unobstructed view of the entire length of the tower. With portable radio in-hand, we would count down along with the announcer, and witness the tower come to life. We never missed a lighting of that tower, until they ceased lighting the tower several years later.
