Dean Spencer, a beloved radio pioneer in Bedford, Ind., was remembered during a celebration of life event earlier this month.
The ceremony’s unique location — at the foot of WBIW’s radio tower — paid homage to Spencer’s lifelong career in radio.
Spencer moved to Bedford in 1974, where he soon after become general manager, and eventually the owner, of WBIW(AM).
He was later granted license to locally-operate two other stations — WBIF(FM) and WWEG(FM) — which he did for the next four decades. He passed away in January of this year at the age of 89.
On Aug. 3, the heritage station, WBIW, drew a crowd of former employees and community members to honor Spencer’s legacy.
As reported on WBIW’s website, Spencer’s final wish was to have his ashes spread around the station tower. His request was honored by his son, Scott.
“The symbolic gesture connected Spencer’s spirit forever with the place he loved and where he made is mark,” wrote WBIW in its story.

WBIW/WBIF/WWEG CEO Holly Davis credits Spencer with laying the foundation for the stations’ continued success.
During the ceremony, time was also granted for attendees to tour WBIW’s renovated building.
