XM Satellite Radio has displayed a concept car in its booth at the Consumer Electronics Show, and now the satcaster says this year, the technology in the vehicle is ready for prime time.
Next week, CES attendees will be able to see in-car video, voice command, weather alerts, parking space locator, and other innovations in the XM Advanced Services Vehicle. The 2006 Lexus LX 470 will showcase in-car video with XM’s partner On2 Technologies, and other new technologies that can be delivered to the automobile by XM’s network of satellites and ground repeaters. The in-car video is designed to receive audio and video entertainment from XM. Video content can be either streamed live or stored for later playback.
The Voice Command system that lets drivers use conversational speech to control the XM radio will be featured. The technology is part of a new multi-year partnership between XM and VoiceBox to deliver a voice-enabled XM Radio platform to automakers and the aftermarket.
XM WeatherLink delivers advanced warning of weather-related driving conditions in real time; It will be demoed in the vehicle. Developed with XM’s partner WxWorx using the same technology behind the XM WX Satellite Weather service for marine and aviation, XM WeatherLink alerts drivers to weather conditions on the road ahead.
Building on its NavTraffic service, XM will demonstrate its “ParkingLink” capability concept, which works with the car’s navigation system to find available parking spots and display those on a navigation map.
The concept vehicle also contains streaming data displays of stock quotes and sports scores on the XM radio.
