From our “Who’s Buying What” page: In Columbia, Mo., 89.5 KOPN(FM) has deployed a Broadcast Electronics STX 10 FM transmitter as part of its ongoing station upgrades.
KOPN Community Radio operates the 36 kW ERP Class C2 station, which has been on the air since 1973. The noncommercial outlet serves mid-Missouri with a mix of local programming, national news, independent talk and a wide range of music.
Following an engineering evaluation last year, the station sought a technology refresh to lower operating costs and extend its signal reach for the future. The new solid-state transmitter replaces an older BE FM10S unit.
According to a release, the FM10S remains operational at full capacity and will serve as the station’s backup.
KOPN board member Ed Herrmann and chief operator Dylan Martin managed the technical side of the project, collaborating with BE’s Quincy, Ill.-based design and support teams.
The station’s leadership was impressed with the STX 10’s built-in IP connectivity. Its browser-based HTML5 graphical user interface allows for password-protected remote monitoring and control.
“It will save engineering trips to the tower and make it easier for our volunteer programmers to take readings,” Herrmann said.
