All NYC Subway Stations to be Covered With Wi-Fi by Year’s End

NEW YORK�More than 230 NYC subway stations are now covered with Wi-Fi, andTransit Wirelessnow says it will be done with the wireless LAN deployment by the end of the year, according toLight Reading.

In 2007, Transit Wireless LLC was awarded a 25-year contract by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to deploy and then maintain cellular and Wi-Fi service across the New York subway system.

Transit Wireless uses WiFi hotspots and a distributed antenna system, connected back to base stations by fiber, to offer the service across the underground stations in the NYC subway system. The company originally said it would complete the combined cellular and WiFi deployment by the end of 2017. According to the same article, all the major carriers are signed on for the service, but they aren’t all deploying on the same schedule.
