Angel Radio’s DAB Minimux Reaches 1st Anniversary

Portsmouth minimux has 17 services broadcasting, with two more pending

LOS ANGELESAbout a month ago,we introduced Angel Radio from the Portsmouth area in England. I heard from Tony Smith, founder of the station, with a few updates to that article.

The DAB minimuxes have not enabled Angel Radio to be heard in West Sussex, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. We pay thousands of s for carriage on Arqiva’s South Hampshire multiplex, which we have been on since 2010.

The small scale minimuxes have enabled Angel Radio to be heard on DAB in Woking, Birmingham, Cambridge and Norwich.

Angel Radio also runs its own minimux covering Portsmouth and the surrounding area and provides carriage for over a dozen stations, said Tony. Angel Radio has also recently been awarded another FM license by Ofcom. This will be on a different frequency and have much higher power than our present 101.1 FM license.

The Portsmouth minimux, owned and operated by Angel Radio, is now a year old and has 17 services broadcasting, with two more expected to launch soon.

Twelve of the programs being broadcast feature some flavor of Portsmouth-targeted content, and thirteen are broadcast in stereo, a record for a UK DAB multiplex. Following the original nine month trial period, the license has been extended by two more years to the 18th of May of 2018, by which time it is hoped permanent licensing will be available for DAB minimuxes, according toradiotoday.co.uk.

Tony was quoted in the same article: Over the past year, we have demonstrated that DAB digital radio broadcasting is a viable platform for broadcasting to smaller areas than traditional multiplexes, with lower overheads, resulting in broadcasters being able to transmit on DAB that might otherwise have been excluded. All the services on-air at the end of the original nine month license term re-contracted with us for our extended license term, and we see that as a resounding endorsement of our work in Portsmouth. The unsung hero of this project is Angel Radios Head of Digital Development, Ash Elford, who has worked tirelessly to ensure Portsmouth digital radio listeners are the best catered for in the whole of the UK.
