Kevin Klose Now RFE/RL Leader

Things have come full circle for Kevin Klose at Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

The Broadcasting Board of Governors had hired Klose as acting director of RFE/RL in January. He’s now been appointed its president and chief executive officer. The BBG offered Klose a multiyear contract, to be reviewed annually.

Klose has a long association with U.S. overseas broadcasting. He first joined RFE/RL in 1992 as director of its Radio Liberty division, and as president of the network from 1994 to 1997 oversaw its relocation from Munich to Prague. Klose was president of NPR from 1998 to 2008, and named president emeritus in 2008. Prior to his first stint at RFE/RL, he was an editor and reporter for the Washington Post for 25 years, including posts as Moscow bureau chief, city editor and deputy national editor.

Currently, Klose is a tenured professor at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland. He recently left his post as dean of the journalism college to return to RFE/RL and will be on leave from his faculty position.
