Once upon a time it was “Banned in Boston.”

Now it’s BADASS in Boston — officially, the Boston-Area Definitive Audio Student Summit, an AES regional gathering aimed at connecting area college students with audio industry veterans.

Conducted Oct. 1 at the New England Institute of Art, the event featured sessions from producers and engineers along with a small show floor displaying cool toys that the attending students could salivate over. There were also educational sessions examining audio practices, techniques and equipment.

Among the speakers were Don Puluse (Sly & The Family Stone, Chicago) and Sean Slade (Warren Zevon, Radiohead, Hole) along with others whose credits include work with Alison Kraus, Dolly Parton, Hank Williams, Jr., Black Eyed Peas, Eminem and Wilco.

The annual summit was developed by NEIA Associate Professor of Audio & Media Technology John Krivit. Krivit is also the Chair of the AES Education Committee.

He stated: “I’ve always felt that students receive a better education when they truly understand the industry they are trying to enter … We try to have a day on the NEIA campus that looks like a smaller version of the big Audio Engineering Society conventions where students get to see the depth and breadth of the industry.”
