SmartDeviceLink is an open-source automotive solution originally developed by Ford Motor Company. SDL technology allows drivers to connect their smartphone to the car, integrating mobile applications for in-vehicle control. The technology is available in more than 10 million Ford vehicles, including a majority of the companys 2017 models. Adopted by Toyota and others, SDL makes it possible for any automotive OEM to retain branding and simplifies the integration of applications and content in vehicles.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto also allow passengers to connect their smartphone to the car, but are mobile operating system specific. CarPlay works only with iPhone 5 and higher; Android Auto works only with Android phones running 5.0 (Lollipop) or higher. These platforms bring the look and feel of the drivers mobile phone to the car dashboard, and in addition to full phone functionality, standard and popular third-party applications such as messaging, maps and media are included.

Personal demonstration scheduling will be available on Sept. 6 from 10:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. and Sept. 7 from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., during the NABRadio Show, to be held between Sept. 5 and 8 in Austin, Texas.
